mos def
Finally after many years of deperately wanting to see one of my all time favourite artists Mos Def. I got my ginger self along to his Shepherds Bush Gig. Now the gig was advertised as 'Mos Def and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble' and I thought on reading the shiny purple poster.... Mos Def and a live baned whick-ed...

Unfortunately they were only the support, but bugger me were they good support. Tight, bags of energy and soul - kept the crowd going for a good hour odd with a jazz, funk, hip hop- waves your hands in the air fusion type affair. You can check out their stuff here> http://www.myspace.com/hypnoticbusiness
Mos Def was running pretty late and due to the 11.30 curfew I dont think we got the full gig. However Mos Def didnt dissapoint, visibly slightly either pissed or stoned he still managed to deliver some of the classics (Boogie Man, Umi Says and laydees favourite Ms Fat Booty.) with poise, charisma and coviction. Mos has a real connection with the audience and the intimacy of the venue suited the low key set up to a tea. Two DJ's one Mic, the bare essentials - no big booty dancers or a crew of 50 idiots from 'back in the day' shouting "whut yeah uh huh etc". The nods to the fair city of London brought even the most lathargic fans on board. With Mos enterng the stage to the Clash's London Calling booming out from the grainy sound system.
My absolute highlight was London's finest MC (imo) Kano joining Mos for a rendition of London Town aka Brooklyn Town. Kano's hyperactivity matched with Mos's trademark relaxed swagger was an excellent pairing.
The Kids at the Independant have a great review of the gig which can be read here>

So to quote the great Blue, One love for the city streets, one love for the hip-hop beats.
